The Illusion of Control: You Don’t Own Your Followers or Content in Social Media

Updated: Jul 3

Let’s get real for a second—if your entire business lives on Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook, you don’t actually own it. It may sound harsh, but it’s the truth.

Why Relying on Social Media Alone is Insufficient for Your Online Business

Today, I'm sharing why relying on social media alone is not enough to support your online business. Social media platforms provide borrowed space. Your audience? They’re not really yours. Your content? It exists at the mercy of an algorithm that changes more often than the weather.

Yet, so many business owners invest everything into these platforms. They hope that just one more viral post will change everything. But what happens when Instagram crashes? What if your account gets hacked? And what happens when the algorithm decides your content is no longer ‘worthy’ of reach?

I’ve been there. I would refresh my feed, wondering why yesterday’s post got 10,000 views, but today’s barely hit 200. I tried all the tricks—trending audio, hashtags, and perfectly curated captions. But nothing felt sustainable. I was stuck in a cycle of chasing engagement instead of actually growing my business. Eventually, I realized: I was building my house on rented land.

Understanding the Algorithm: It's Not Your Friend

Social media is designed to keep people on the platform. That’s the goal. Your posts, no matter how brilliant, only get pushed out if they align with the platform’s agenda. Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook don’t care about your sales, website traffic, or business goals. They care about keeping users scrolling.

Here’s why this matters:

  • Your links get suppressed.

  • Your posts only reach a fraction of your audience.

  • You’re forced to play by ever-changing rules just to maintain visibility.

If your entire business strategy relies on hoping the algorithm shows you favor, you’re setting yourself up for stress, burnout, and disappointment.

Real Businesses Don’t Rely on Borrowed Traffic

Now, I’m not saying social media is useless. Far from it! Social media is a fantastic way to connect, build relationships, and show up in front of potential customers. But if you’re not moving people off these platforms and into a space you own, you’re just spinning your wheels.

Imagine this: if Instagram shut down tomorrow, would your business survive? If the answer is no, then it’s time to rethink the foundation you’re building on.

Shifting Your Business Strategy: Own Your Audience

Here’s the important shift that changed everything for me: I stopped relying on social media as my main business driver and started using it as a supporting tool. Instead of chasing engagement, I focused on getting people onto my email list and website—spaces I own.

1. Build an Email List: Your Biggest Business Asset

An email list is the only direct line of communication you have with your audience that isn’t controlled by an algorithm. If you’re not actively growing one, you’re missing out on one of the most powerful marketing tools there is.

With an email list, you can:

  • Reach your audience directly—no algorithm interference.

  • Nurture relationships without worrying about performance.

  • Own your audience—no one can take it away from you.

If you’re devoted to creating content but not collecting emails, you’re just making free content for Instagram.

2. Focus on SEO and Your Website

A strong website with good SEO (Search Engine Optimization) allows people to find you long after your social media posts vanish into the void. Unlike Instagram, where a post lasts 24 hours (if you’re lucky), a well-optimized blog or sales page can attract traffic for years.

SEO is not as exciting as a viral TikTok, but it’s what creates sustainable sales and visibility.

3. Use Social Media for Connection, Not Dependence

Once I stopped obsessing over engagement and treated social media as an actual social platform, my mindset shifted dramatically. Now, I use it to:

  • Build relationships in DMs.

  • Share value without feeling pressured.

  • Connect with my audience authentically.

The difference? I’m not relying on it anymore. If my reach drops, I don’t panic because I know my business isn’t solely dependent on it.

The Bottom Line: Build a Business That Can’t Be Taken Away

If your business is entirely tied to a platform you don’t own, you’re always at risk. Social media should be a tool, not the foundation. The real power comes when you take control—by building an audience, nurturing genuine connections, and creating a business that lasts, regardless of what the algorithm does next.
